The issue of religion and politics in social science scholarship goes back to the work of political philosopher Leo Strauss. In his work Strauss addressed the issue of articulation between the phenomenon of religion and that of politics in terms of four concerns. These concerns were: a) Does politics originate out of scriptures or rationality? b) Is monarchical right to rule granted by divinity? c) Is it allowed by scriptures and Divinity that rulers can wage holy wars? d) If there is a discrepancy between religious laws and secular laws which set of laws ought to prevail?

Sana Maqbool, 01-256132-007
This research is an exploratory inquiry, intended to comparatively study and understand the
differences in experiences and perceptions of death and dying, and the manner in which these
differences manifest themselves in the individual’s social life. The research explores i) the
variations in experiences and perceptions of death of individuals, ii) the rationalizations
that these individuals employ to cope with death, iii) the various underlying meanings and
symbols attached with death. The researcher has situated this inquiry in the twin cities of
Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and specific sites within this area, including a hospital, an old age
home, a graveyard, a Rescue 1122 center, a shrine, and a university. A number of qualitative
techniques and tools have been employed to collect data, including the use of key informants,
focused group discussions, in-depth interviews and field notes. The sample of respondents has
been purposively selected from each of the specific sites mentioned above. The study produced
comprehensive knowledge about the concept of death and dying as understood by the individual,
and the impacts that this understanding has on the social life of the individual.

Mariam Gul, 01-256132-006
This study sought to analyse the impact of differential pedagogical styles on students’ motivation to excel academically. The selected dimensions of pedagogy in this research were lecture style, interaction with students and grading of assessments. The chosen dimensions have been applied in an exploratory study of two private schools in Islamabad, to discover different pedagogies that help seventh grade students to feel motivated towards striving for higher grades or showing any kind of improvement in their studies. The study also pointed out those pedagogical styles that resulted in demotivating students in their studies. Freirian conceptions about Critical Pedagogy, the models of student motivation by Alan Mclean, and Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach were primarily used to analyse and understand the links between pedagogy and students’ motivation to excel academically. Fundamentally, this study aimed at unearthing a motivational pedagogy that actually enables students to feel motivated in their studies so that they can excel academically. This study also employed a unique way of metaphorically analysing the factors that give rise to a motivational pedagogy.
